I am bombarded daily with emails telling of how other people make six figures in a single year while working online -“Rags to Riches” stories, the results of an entrepreneurial spirit and the perfecting of marketing skills etc. But…are these stories really true? Is it possible to make six figures a year marketing online even in today’s market?
I wanted to take a closer look.
It took very little effort to find all kinds of articles with the words “Earn Six Figures”. Some of the page titles also included “working from home”, “as a freelance writer”, “from Internet Marketing” …you get the picture. But the one thing that they all seem to purport is the idea of a system or program for purchase. So, is it only possible to make good money if you are the one selling the program or the system? [One article actually offered “3 legit online jobs” leading me to wonder about the legitimacy of all the many others being promoted as ways to earn a living online.]
As I’ve already said, there were many articles on making money online, many suggestions, programs, offers to train, and invitations to join – and all under the premise of earning six figures in a very short time. But, is this just a case of "it's their shtick and their shticking to it?” I mean, seriously, why is it always SIX FIGURES? Wouldn’t it be easier to sell the idea that one can make 50 or 60 thousand per year working online? Wouldn’t more people who are looking for a way to make money from home be more easily persuaded to invest in a program that wasn’t promising them the moon? Or is there a way, a process, a legitimate and reasonable means to making big bucks online without risking everything you own?
The following quotes are from those involved in some form of online marketing that are said to have made that kind of money – and even more. Maybe you have heard of them:
“I never dreamed I’d hit six-figures so quickly. Or that I’d have to put clients on a waiting list. It was crazy — the projects just kept coming. They still do, to this day.” ~ Mindy McHorse, Executive Editor of The Barefoot Writer Magazine.
“I was tricked, fooled and (I don’t like to use the word scammed) but, probably scammed and eventually I found a mentor in the U.S. And he gave me the best bit of advice that anyone has ever given me and that was to stop being an opportunity seeker and to start investing in myself and most importantly, if I was going to be successful in business, particularly online, then the best thing for me to do would be to learn marketing.” ~ Stuart Ross, Founder of The Six Figure Mentors.
“A quick glance at the reports in my handy Freshbooks invoicing system tells me this year I made it. Still a few small tinkerings to do to make sure every gig is included and everything’s in the right column, but as a rough estimate, I’m there. Just to be clear, I’m talking about what I earned from freelance writing —” ~ Carol Tice, MakeALivingWriting.com.
“I’m sort of just a generalist…I read “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” and when I first delved into that, I thought wow! – I didn’t realize you could make passive income, make income without having to work or go to a 9 to 5 job. We became the number one Dragon Boat provider all across Australia. This was all done online and that was my first real online, Internet-based business where I made a six figure income and that’s how I also discovered outsourcing…it’s a very good way to leverage and grow your business very quickly.” ~ Tyrone Shum, TyroneShum.com
These are only a handful of ordinary people who have been extraordinarily successful online. They have apparently done their homework, paid their dues and earned a living doing something apart from the ordinary data entry jobs. It’s not that they have not had to work – but when you really enjoy what you are doing to earn money, I guess it seems so unlike work that the term may easily get left out of the equation. The true cost may be overshadowed by the success.
The truth is that no one gets rich without some thought and more than a little time and effort, unless they are blessed by an inheritance – and even that does not make it to one’s bank account overnight. However, for a few who have a solid understanding of creative and innovative marketing techniques and who embrace certain available techniques and practice their use consistently, there is still good money to be made on the Internet – even in today’s slower market. Depending on your niche, it may be even easier than you think.
Everyone loves a good “Rags to Riches” story and we all love the possibility of having one of our own even more.
So, how possible is it to earn six figures in a year working online? Of course, according to just about every single successful person, whether online or offline, the level of your success in doing any type of work – ultimately depends on YOU – and what success personally means to you. Hint: Making six figures per year only equals success if your only goal in life is to make six figures per year.
* What do you know?
* What are you willing to learn?
* What do you have?
* What do you want?

These are the questions that every successful person has asked him or herself at some point along their journey – and they are the questions you must answer as well. These questions will help you to realize that no matter what the income potential – it is only available to those who are determined to go after it.
